Why aid is needed

A surge of water, mud and rock — set off by a glacier collapse on the Nepal–Tibet border — hit the mountain valleys in the morning of 26 August, with the worst damage in Rasuwa district. It swept away homes, buried farmland, trapped workers in a hydropower tunnel, and destroyed the roads and bridges that rescue teams need to reach people.

The first days decide how bad this gets. Survivors are in the open, nights are cold, and standing water spreads disease. Shops and health posts are gone or cut off. Getting essentials to people now prevents a second wave of harm.
